Esports Betting Strategy: Staking Plans, Bankroll Management and Value Betting

13 min readUpdated 8 October 2026GGLBET SG

An esports betting strategy has two jobs. It decides which bets are worth placing, and it decides how much money goes on each one. Most bettors spend all their energy on the first job and almost none on the second, which is why a decent eye for matches can still end in an empty account. This guide covers both halves with real numbers: bankroll management, betting units, flat betting, percentage staking, Kelly criterion betting and value betting, each worked through on a SGD 1,000 bankroll.

In short: set aside a bankroll you can afford to lose, stake 1% to 2% of it per bet, only bet when your own probability beats the bookmaker’s price, and keep a record of every wager. Everything below explains why those four rules hold up, and what happens to your money when you break them.

What an Esports Betting Strategy Can and Cannot Control

No esports betting strategy controls results. A 60% favourite still loses four times in ten. What a strategy controls is everything around the result: which matches you bet, which market you choose, the price you accept, the size of the stake and the point at which you stop for the day.

Esports adds a twist that football bettors often miss. The match format changes how often favourites win. Take a team with a 60% chance of winning any single map, and assume each map is independent. In a best-of-one, it loses 40% of the time. In a best-of-three, where it needs two maps, it wins the series 64.8% of the time and loses 35.2%. The better team is the same team, but the best-of-one is far more random. A sound esports betting strategy stakes less on best-of-one matches for exactly that reason.

The same maths explains why the early stages of a Major feel chaotic. When rounds are played as single maps, upsets are built into the format. Our PGL Major Singapore section covers how that applies to the CS2 Major in December.

Bankroll Management Comes Before Any Strategy

Bankroll management is the rule that every other part of an esports betting strategy sits on. Your bankroll is a fixed sum set aside only for betting: money you could lose in full without missing a bill, a loan payment or a meal. If losing it would hurt, it is too big.

Set the number and keep it separate

Pick the figure once, for example SGD 1,000, and keep it in a separate account or e-wallet. Do not top it up in the middle of a month after a bad run. Topping up is how a SGD 1,000 hobby turns into a SGD 4,000 problem without any single decision feeling large.

Write down your stop rules

Good bankroll management has its stop rules written down before the first bet is placed. Three that work in practice:

  • Session stop: stop for 24 hours after any session that loses 5% of the bankroll.
  • Monthly cap: no new deposits until the next month, whatever happens.
  • Review point: if the bankroll falls 25% below its starting level, stop and review every bet before placing another.

None of these rules makes money. They stop one bad evening from undoing a month of careful work, which matters more. If you have not opened an account yet, our step-by-step guide to betting on esports covers verification and deposits.

Betting Units and Flat Betting

Betting units turn a bankroll into stake sizes. One unit is a fixed slice of the bankroll, usually 1% or 2%. On SGD 1,000, a 1% unit is SGD 10. Thinking in units makes your records comparable: “plus six units this month” means the same thing whether your bankroll is SGD 500 or SGD 5,000.

Flat betting is the simplest staking plan built on units. Every bet is the same size, one unit, whatever the odds and however confident you feel. It sounds too basic to be a strategy, but it is the right starting point for most new bettors, because it makes your results measure your judgement rather than your stake sizing.

Here is what flat betting at SGD 10 looks like over 50 bets at average odds of 2.00, at different hit rates:

Hit rate Bets won (of 50) Profit Return on stakes
46% 23 -SGD 40 -8%
50% 25 SGD 0 0%
52% 26 +SGD 20 +4%
54% 27 +SGD 40 +8%
56% 28 +SGD 60 +12%

The gap between losing and winning is a handful of bets out of fifty. That is why flat betting is honest. It shows you quickly whether your picks beat the price, without a lucky big stake hiding a weak record. If market names such as map handicap or totals are still new to you, read our esports betting basics first.

Percentage Staking: A Staking Plan That Shrinks With Losses

A percentage staking plan bets a fixed share of the current bankroll, not the starting one. At 2%, the first bet on SGD 1,000 is SGD 20. If the bankroll drops to SGD 900, the next stake is SGD 18. Stakes shrink during a losing run and grow during a winning one.

That automatic brake is the main reason to use it. Compare ten straight losses under three plans, each starting from SGD 1,000:

Staking plan Stake on bet 1 Bankroll after 10 straight losses
Flat SGD 20 SGD 20 SGD 800
2% of current bankroll SGD 20 SGD 817.07
5% of current bankroll SGD 50 SGD 598.74

At 2%, ten losses in a row cost about 18%. At 5%, they cost about 40%, and you then need a 67% gain just to get back to the start. Ten straight losses sound unlikely, but they are not. Across 500 bets at a 50% hit rate, the chance of at least one run of ten losses is 21.5%. If you lose 55% of your bets, it rises to 43.3%. Any staking plan has to survive that run.

Kelly Criterion Betting, and Why Most Bettors Use a Fraction

Kelly criterion betting sizes each stake by your edge. The formula comes from a 1956 paper by John L. Kelly Jr. at Bell Labs, and it works out the share of the bankroll that grows it fastest over time, if your probabilities are right:

Stake fraction = (b × p – q) ÷ b, where b is the decimal odds minus 1, p is your probability of winning and q is 1 – p.

Take odds of 2.50, so b is 1.5, and suppose you rate the team a 45% chance. The formula gives (1.5 × 0.45 – 0.55) ÷ 1.5 = 0.083, or 8.3% of the bankroll. On SGD 1,000 that is about SGD 83. Half Kelly is about SGD 42, and quarter Kelly is about SGD 21.

Full Kelly assumes your 45% is correct, and it rarely is. If the true chance is 40%, the bet at 2.50 has zero expected value (2.50 × 0.40 = 1.00), so the SGD 83 stake carries risk with no edge behind it. Overestimate by more than that and full Kelly puts large stakes on bets that lose money over time. That is why fractional Kelly, a quarter or a half of the full figure, is the usual way to apply Kelly criterion betting.

A real price from the 8 October board

On 8 October 2026, GGLBET priced a tier-two CS2 match, HOTU against Fnatic, at 1.80 and 1.82. Say your research makes Fnatic a 58% chance. At 1.82, that bet has an expected value of +5.6%, because 1.82 × 0.58 = 1.056. Full Kelly suggests 6.8% of the bankroll. Quarter Kelly suggests 1.7%, or about SGD 17 on SGD 1,000. Quarter Kelly lands close to a sensible flat unit, and that is the useful lesson: Kelly works best as a check that your stake matches your edge, not as permission to bet big.

Value Betting: Where the Edge in Any Strategy Comes From

Staking decides how fast you win or lose. Only value betting decides whether you win at all.

Staking only manages money. The profit, if there is any, comes from value betting: placing bets where your probability is higher than the one built into the odds. The test is one multiplication. Multiply the decimal odds by your probability. If the answer is above 1.00, the bet has value. If it is below 1.00, it does not, however confident you feel.

Strip out the margin first

Bookmakers build their margin into both sides of a market. In the HOTU and Fnatic match above, the implied probabilities were 55.6% and 54.9%, which add up to 110.5%. The extra 10.5% is the margin. Divide each side by the total to remove it, and the fair prices come out at about 1.99 and 2.01. That tells you two things: the market saw the match as close to a coin flip, and a 10% margin is expensive. Margins on major events are often thinner than on small ones, so value is easier to find where the betting volume is deepest.

Build your own number before you look at the odds

Value betting needs your own probability, written down before you see the price. For esports, the inputs that move it most are:

  • Map pool and veto: in CS2 and Valorant, which maps a team can pick and ban often decides a series.
  • Roster news: a stand-in or a late transfer changes a five-player team more than one substitute changes a football side.
  • Patch timing: results from before a balance patch are weaker evidence than results after it.
  • Format: best-of-one, best-of-three or best-of-five, as worked through above.
  • Venue: LAN results and online results are not the same evidence.

If you look at the odds first, they anchor you, and your own probability ends up being the bookmaker’s with a few points added.

A four-step value check

  1. Write your probability down before you open the market, for example Fnatic 58%.
  2. Read the price and work out its implied probability: 1 ÷ 1.82 = 54.9%.
  3. Multiply your probability by the odds: 0.58 × 1.82 = 1.056. Above 1.00 means value; at or below 1.00, skip the bet.
  4. Size the stake with your plan, not with your confidence: one unit if you flat bet, or a quarter of the Kelly figure as an upper limit.

Check yourself against the closing price

A common yardstick for value betting is the closing price, meaning the odds just before the match starts. If you regularly take 2.10 on teams that close at 1.90, the market has moved towards your view, which is an early sign that your numbers are good. If your prices are usually worse than the close, your edge is probably smaller than your results suggest.

Fitting the Strategy to Esports Markets

Match winner and map winner

Use one unit as standard. Drop to half a unit on best-of-one matches, for the format reason explained at the top of this page.

Map handicaps

Handicap lines are often priced close to even money, which suits flat betting. They depend heavily on the veto, so only bet them when you know both teams’ map pools.

Live betting

Live esports odds move within seconds of a big round or a stolen objective. Cap live stakes at half your normal unit, and never use live markets to win back a pre-match loss. That is chasing, not strategy. Our esports betting tips for beginners cover live-betting habits in more detail.

Outrights and the PGL Major Singapore

Outright bets tie money up for weeks and usually carry larger margins. Keep them to a small, fixed slice of the bankroll, for example 5% in total across all open outrights. For the PGL Major Singapore, which runs from 25 November to 13 December 2026, Valve’s Regional Standings decide the 32 invited teams on 2 November. An outright placed before then can land on a team that never qualifies.

A Worked Month: SGD 1,000 and Three Staking Plans

To see how the plans differ, take one hypothetical month of 20 bets, all at odds of 2.00, with 11 wins and 9 losses. That is a 55% hit rate. Here is the result under each plan:

Staking plan Stake rule End of month Lowest point if the 9 losses come first
Flat betting SGD 10 on every bet SGD 1,020 (+SGD 20) SGD 910 (-9%)
Percentage staking 2% of current bankroll SGD 1,036.66 (+SGD 36.66) SGD 833.75 (-16.6%)
Quarter Kelly 2.5% of current bankroll (full Kelly at 55% and 2.00 is 10%) SGD 1,044.73 (+SGD 44.73) SGD 796.24 (-20.4%)

Two things stand out. With the percentage-based plans, the order of results does not change where you finish: 11 wins and 9 losses end at the same figure whether the losses come first or last. The order does change how deep the hole gets on the way. The plans that earn more in a good month also dig deeper in a bad stretch.

The 55% hit rate in this example is generous, too. A 50% hit rate at 2.00 only breaks even, and real bookmakers rarely offer 2.00 on a coin flip. At 1.90, the same 50% record loses 5% of every stake placed.

Keeping Records That Show Whether Your Strategy Works

Every part of an esports betting strategy depends on honest records. Without them you cannot tell skill from luck, and a lucky month feels exactly like a skilful one. A spreadsheet is enough. Log these columns for every bet:

Column Why it matters
Date and game Shows which titles you actually beat and which you only enjoy watching
Market and format Separates best-of-one results from series results
Your probability Written before you saw the odds, so you can check your calibration later
Odds taken and closing odds The closing-price check from the value betting section
Stake in units Keeps results comparable as the bankroll changes
Result in units The number that tells you whether to keep going

Review the log every 50 bets. If your results by game, market or format show a clear loss after a few hundred bets, stop betting that segment. If they show nothing clear either way, keep stakes small until they do.

Staking Mistakes That Break an Esports Betting Strategy

  • Doubling after losses. The martingale system doubles the stake after each loss. Starting at SGD 10, six straight losses cost SGD 630, and the seventh bet needs SGD 640, more than 60% of a SGD 1,000 bankroll. Across 300 bets at a 50% hit rate, the chance of at least one run of six losses is 91.3%. The system does not fail sometimes. It fails on schedule.
  • Raising stakes after a hot streak. A good week does not mean your edge has grown. Keep the same unit until the bankroll itself has grown.
  • Parlays to get it back. Each extra leg multiplies the margin. A four-leg parlay of 1.90 picks pays about 13.0, while four fair coin flips should pay 16.0.
  • Mixing betting money with savings. Once the line blurs, bankroll management stops working, because there is no longer a bankroll to manage.
  • Skipping the records. Without the log above, every other rule on this page is guesswork.

A staking plan does not change the law. Under section 20 of Singapore’s Gambling Control Act 2022, gambling with a service you know, or should know, is unlicensed is an offence, with a fine of up to S$10,000, up to six months in jail, or both. Only operators licensed or exempted by the Gambling Regulatory Authority may offer remote gambling to people in Singapore, and offshore esports sites are not among them. Our main esports betting Singapore page sets out the legal position in full.

Esports Betting Strategy FAQ

What is the best esports betting strategy for beginners?

Flat betting at one unit, set at 1% of the bankroll, on match-winner markets in one game you already watch, with stop rules written down in advance. It keeps losses small while you find out whether your picks beat the price.

What is a betting unit?

A betting unit is a fixed share of your bankroll used as your standard stake, usually 1% or 2%. On a SGD 1,000 bankroll, a 1% unit is SGD 10.

How much of my bankroll should I stake on one bet?

For most bettors, 1% to 2%. At 5% per bet, ten straight losses cost about 40% of the bankroll, and a run of ten is more common than it sounds.

Is Kelly criterion betting safe?

Only if your probabilities are accurate, and they rarely are. A small overestimate turns full Kelly into large stakes on bets with no edge. Most people who use it stake a quarter or half of the full figure.

What is value betting?

Value betting means betting only when the decimal odds multiplied by your probability come to more than 1.00. It is the only source of long-term profit. Staking decides how fast you win or lose, not whether you do.

Can a staking plan make esports betting profitable?

No. A staking plan controls risk and the speed of your results. Only an edge found through value betting can make the long-run result positive, and most bettors do not have that edge.
